CANstruction 2024 Recap: Cutting Hunger One Can at a Time

AFG is proud to celebrate the success of CANstruction 2024, a powerful campaign hosted by the Washington Architectural Foundation and AIA DC in support of the Capital Area Foodbank, combining creativity, teamwork, and community impact to fight hunger.

This year AFG’s theme, “Cutting Hunger,” came to life through a life-sized saw sculpture paired with a fork and spoon, cutting through an empty plate—a poignant reminder of the realities of food insecurity.

The journey began weeks before build day, as AFG’s team immersed themselves in preparation. A standout moment was when team members Helena Hassan and Dawn Walters visited the Capital Area Food Bank Headquarters to verify the can order. This visit not only ensured a smooth process but also reinforced the importance of the mission.

On November 11th, the pre-build day was buzzing with activity in the AFG Headquarters office in Herndon, VA. Volunteers Craig Leary, John Newlin, and Tony Lopacki prepared boards for the sculpture, while Kai Goodrich created a stunning 4-foot spoon and fork with support from Lorena Alvarez, Helena, and Dawn. Edouard Martin oversaw design logistics remotely, and Sally Clark kept morale high with encouragement and a delicious lunch.

Build day on November 24th was a testament to teamwork and determination. Helena led the charge, supported by a dedicated group that included AFG employees, their families, and friends. Notable contributions came from Marketing’s Caity O’Connor, Craig’s wife Cathy, and John Newlin’s son Noah. Together, they transformed 1,980 cans into an impactful sculpture, raising $3,125 in the process.

The final sculptures, including AFG’s creation, were on display at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., through December 2nd. Visitors were encouraged to stop by and marvel at the innovative designs while supporting the cause.

This year’s efforts have left a lasting impact, not only in the impressive donation to the Capital Area Food Bank but also in the sense of community fostered among participants.

AFG extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, and to those who generously donated, and looks forward to continuing this tradition of creativity and compassion in future CANstruction events.

“Every can, every dollar, and every volunteer hour made a difference. This project embodies the spirit of giving and our commitment to the fight against hunger.”
