GSA R4 Hugo Black Courthouse Elevator Modernization Project

Courthouses & Criminal Justice

AFG is providing Construction Management (CMa) services for the Hugo Black Elevator Modernization project. This essential initiative involves the replacement of five elevators in the Hugo L. Black Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Birmingham, Alabama.

Originally constructed in 1987, the Hugo Black US Courthouse is approximately 184K SF and houses the Northern District of Alabama US District Court. After nearly 40 years of intensive use within the 8-story high rise courthouse building, the passenger elevators have reached the end of their useful life.

Due to ongoing equipment issues and the challenge of sourcing costly, hard-to-find replacement parts, GSA has determined that full replacement is more viable than repair. AFG will oversee the design, construction management, and quality assurance for the complete modernization of four passenger elevators and one judges’ elevator over a two-year period. The project will encompass the disposal of outdated systems, installation of new elevators, and ongoing maintenance throughout the construction process.
