GSA Sydney Yates Federal Building Exterior Restoration
Federal & Defense Agencies
AFG Group, Inc. is providing construction management services to the General Services Administration (GSA), National Capital Region (Region 11) for the exterior restoration of the Sidney Yates Federal Building (Yates) located at 14th & Independence Avenue, SW, in Washington, DC.
The Sidney Yates Federal Building was completed in 1879 to originally serve as the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three additional wings were added between 1891 and 1905, each with unique facade characteristics.
Currently, the building serves as the U.S. Forest Service Headquarters, office space for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and houses the USDA’s Child Development Center. The five-story building measures approximately 200,000 gross square feet and is located on the third busiest avenue in Washington D.C. It is adjacent to some of the nation’s most visited landmarks: the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the White House.
AFG’s role was to ensure that the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties were strictly adhered to during the exterior restoration. This project was classified as a Zone 1 historic building which is an area of high architectural and/or historical significance and should be accurately recovered, by removal of later work and the replacement of missing original work, the form and details of a structure or part of a structure, together with its settings, as it appeared at a particular-time.
